South Africa opener Dean Elgar completed a fluent century on Wednesday as the visitors reached 194 for 1 at tea on the opening day of the first test against Sri Lanka.

Elgar was batting on 102 with Faf du Plessis on 57 at the interval after South Africa took full advantage of good batting conditions.

Left-hander Elgar struck three sixes and 11 fours off 175 deliveries during his second test century.

Du Plessis has struck one six and four fours.
