Rain has the final say once again

October 19, 2012 01:57 am | Updated October 18, 2016 01:05 pm IST - CAPE TOWN:

Rohit Sharma is castled by Azeem Rafiq.

Rain played spoilsport for the second successive day, forcing the Champions League Twenty20 Group ‘B’ tie between Mumbai Indians and Yorkshire to be called off.

Kieron Pollard struck a counter-attacking 20-ball unbeaten 37 as defending champion Mumbai Indians scored 156 for six from 17.5 overs when rain forced the match to be abandoned.

Asked to bat first, Mumbai lost wickets at regular intervals before Pollard put the team back on track. The West Indian smashed three fours and two sixes from the 20 balls he faced before the downpour ended the day’s play.

The highest partnership of the innings was the 36-run stand for the second wicket between opener Dwayne Smith (37) and Rohit Sharma (25).

For Yorkshire, spinners Adil Rashid and Azeem Rafiq took two wickets each.

Smith gave Mumbai a dramatic start, smashing off-spinner Joe Root, who opened the bowling for Yorkshire, for two consecutive sixes off the second and third deliveries.

Sachin Tendulkar, who lofted Ryan Sidebottom for a boundary in the second over of the innings, fell in the next over after a mix-up with Smith.

Mumbai reached 75 for two at the halfway stage before two quick wickets put the skids on the innings.

Rohit lofted a six off Azeem Rafiq but was dismissed off the next ball when he failed to negotiate a yorker-length delivery and was castled. Rashid then dismissed Karthik off the first ball of the 12th over.
