Anand fifth in World rankings

September 02, 2014 02:59 am | Updated 02:59 am IST - NEW DELHI:

An inactive Viswanathan Anand moved up two places to be fifth in the latest World rankings after USA’s Hikaru Nakamura and Russia’s Sergey Karjakin slipped a few rungs following their below par performances in the Chess Olympiad in Norway last month.

World champion Magnus Carlsen held on to the top spot despite losing seven rating points. Levon Aronian was the other player to hold a published rating in excess of 2800.

However, as per the live ratings as on August 31, Italy’s Fabiano Caruana has opened a big lead over Aronian following his five successive victories in the ongoing Sinquefield Cup, the world’s strongest and the first-ever Category 23 event featuring six top-10 players.

For the record, going by the live ratings of the top three players, Carlsen is rated at 2863.9. Caruana has moved up to the second spot with a rating of 2826 — a gain of a whopping 25 points from five games — and Aronian, 2793.6.

Meanwhile, India is ranked joint-fifth with Armenia among the countries rated as per the average ratings of their top-10 players.
