Long distance runner B. Ezhilnilavan (Loyola) and shot putter P. Chidambaranathan (AM Jain) set new meet records in the men’s section on the second day of the A.L. Mudaliar athletics meet here on Monday.
While Ezhilnivalan broke the 30-year-old record of A. Vasantha Kumar (32:20.2) in the 10,000m, Chidambaranathan erased Shabeeb Rahman’s mark of 15.95 set in 2005-06.
For Ezhilnilavan it wasn’t an easy start due to a wet track thanks to brief early morning showers. Sticking to R. Santhosh Kumar, his college-mate for seven laps maintaining a slow and steady pace, Ezhilnilavan picked up speed from the eighth and maintained a healthy lead throughout to finish in a time of 31 minutes 55.6seconds.

Spotted and nurtured by coach M.V. Rajasekar, the 21-year-old overcame the disappointment of a silver medal in 5000m the other day.
Chidambaranathan produced his best — 16.15m — to bag the shot put gold. Starting with 15.59m, it was his sixth and final attempt that fetched him the first place. He trains at St. Joseph’s Prime Sports Academy.
Hailing from Tiruchendur, Chidambaranathan’s desire is to make a firm mark at the National level.

In the women’s category, Radhika of Ethiraj finished first in 100m and second in 100m hurdles to add to her triple jump gold on Sunday.
In the men’s section, Loyola is leading with 49 points followed by AM Jain (30 points).
In the women’s MOP is at the top with 72 points and Ethiraj (48 points) is in second place.
