: Venkatesh’s all-round performance (three for 17 and 59 not out) helped Pon Vidhyashram book a place in the final of the Friends inter-school cricket tournament after beating Loyola International School by four wickets.

The scores: Semifinals: Loyola International School 122 in 19.4 overs (Hari Prasath 62 n.o., Ritvik three for 24, Venkatesh three for 17, Vitesh three for 20) lost to Pon Vidhyashram 126 for six in 19.4 overs (Venkatesh 59 n.o., Venkatesh three for 25); Nellai Nadar MHSS 169 for five in 20 overs (Kishore 35, Mano Balaji 30, Md. Saif Ullah 72, Matheswaran three for 17) bt Chettinadu Hari Shree Vidyalayam 89 for nine in 20 overs (Harish Prabu 30, R.K. Hari Ram three for 14, Mano Balaji three for 10, M.S. Narendran three for 14).

American College HSS advances

American College HSS (Madurai) defeated SAI (Salem) 79-53 to enter the semifinal league of the Mahendran memorial State-level schools basketball tournament on Thursday.

Srihari & Sunil pair triumphs

The pair of Srihari Verghese and Sunil Verghese won the Mylapore Club monthly bridge tournament with a score of 62.73 IMPs playing North-South. Meanwhile, the duo of R. Balasubramanian and K.S. Swaminathan came first with a score of 62.43 IMPs playing from East-West direction.

Other placings:North-South: 2. S.V. Sundaram & R. Vishwanathan; 3. K.V. Ranganath & C. Mohanakrishnan.

East-West: 2. A. Sridhar & S. Kailasam; 3. T.M. Suri & S. Rajaram.

Inter-club squash tournament begins

The three-day V.P. Thirumurthy Memorial Trophy inter-club knock-out squash tournament began at the Madras Cricket Club courts on Thursday.

The host MCC (‘A’ & ‘B’), Gandhi Nagar, Cosmopolitan (‘A’ & ‘B’) and Madras Race Club are the clubs participating in the tournament, which is into its sixth edition.

The events are open singles, veterans’ (above-50) singles, and open doubles comprising two open doubles and one veterans’ doubles.

Ajit Kumbhat, vice-president & chairman, sports committee, MCC, thanked the sponsor VST Group of Companies.

Hemant Mehta, captain, MCC squash team, was also present on the occasion.
