Training programme begins

The month-long training programme on soil and water conservation for B.Tech (Agricultural Engineering) students organised by the Indian Institute of Soil and Water Conservation, Regional Center, began here on June 1.

Around 59 students from the agricultural universities of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, and Madhya Pradesh are participating in the programme.

The programme aims at training students in improving their grasp of techniques associated with soil and water conservation engineering.

Talks on soil and water conservation structures, hydrology, integrated watershed management, watershed planning, agronomical and forestry measures, climate change impacts, application of GIS and remote sensing, soil analysis and community organisation will be held.

Practical and field exercises are also to be held for the students including exercises on how to design various soil and water conservation structures, drainage lines, water harvesting structures, soil analysis, surveying and preparation of detailed project report for watershed planning.

The training programme was inaugurated by the principal of CSI Engineering College, Nilgiris, John Oral Bhaskar. OPS Khola, Head, IISWC Research Center, and S. Manivannan, Principal Scientist and Course Co-ordinator were also present.
