Glowing tributes were paid to Tamil poet and freedom fighter Namakkal Kavignar V. Ramalingam Pillai (1888 – 1972) on his 129th birth anniversary day on Thursday.
Namakkal Kavignar was born on October 19, 1888 in Mohanur. His poems included “Kathiyindri, rathamindri yudham onru..” He was imprisoned by the British for participating in Freedom struggle.
P. Thangamani, Electricity Minister, led the State Government in paying tributes to the late poet at his residence on the Namakkal Kavignar Ramalingam Pillai street on Senthamangalam road here.

The Minister honoured Alamelu Ammal, wife of Amirthalingam, eldest son of Kavignar Ramalingam Pillai, on the occasion.
K. Balasubramanian, Municipal Commissioner; R. Murugasamy, Executive Engineer, Public Works Department; and V. Balakrishnan, District Library Officer; garlanded the portrait.

P.M. Mohan, president of the Namakkal Kavignar Sinthanai Peravai, and Amalraj, president of the Readers Circle of the Namakkal Kavignari Memorial Library, spoke about the life and achievements of the poet.
Booklets were distributed to those who visited the memorial during the day.
