A Maoist couple, who were active in adjoining Maharashtra, handed over themselves to the police in Andhra Pradesh’s Warangal district on Thursday.

Mallesh alias Vinod and his wife Chaya alias Kavitha surrendered before District Superintendent of Police (SP) Shah Nawaz Qasim here.

They were operating in Gadchiroli, the worst Naxal-hit district in Maharashtra, Qasim told PTI over phone.

Mallesh, a native of Warangal district, went to Surat in Gujarat in 1990 in search of job. Later, he joined the Naxal movement and went underground. Mallesh married Chaya, who hailed from Yavatmal district, he said.

The two worked in Maoists’ arms transportation wing and travelled to different areas, including Nagpur and Nashik, the police officer said.

They surrendered after getting disillusioned with Naxal ideology, the SP said.

“We are trying to get details from Maharashtra Police about their involvement in offences there,” Qasim said.
