Supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party put up a road blockade on the iconic Howrah Bridge, a vital link between the city and the rest of the country, as a part of their state-wide protest on Wednesday against rising prices and the State government’s decision to increase power tariff. Police removed the blockade swiftly, easing traffic movement on the busy bridge.
More than 150 party workers were arrested by the city police as they tried to stop vehicles from plying on the streets at several important junctions in the city. No incidents of violence were reported.
“The decision of the State government to hike the cost of electricity comes at a time when the people are already reeling under the effects of rising prices,” said Rahul Sinha, president of the State BJP.

On November 30, a state-wide bandh called by the BJP had seen partial success with disruptions in train services and sporadic incidents.
“We are consistently opposed to the policies of the government,” Mr. Sinha said, adding that demanding the resignation of Mr Bhattacharjee, his party had launched a signature campaign on December 25, the birthday of A.B. Vajpayee.
“We hope to obtain 50 lakh signatures which will be submitted to the new Governor when he assumes office,” he said.
