Representatives of the West Bengal Commission for Women will meet Pinki Pramanik on Monday amidst allegations of mistreatment of the athlete by the police. Pinki is facing a probe regarding her gender after she was accused of rape.
Sunanada Mukherjee, chairperson of the Commission, told T he Hindu on Saturday that she has written to authorities of the Dum Dum Central Correctional Home following reports of the athlete being kept in a male ward of the prison.
“We have not received any reply on the matter. We are likely to meet the athlete on Monday in the prison,” Ms. Mukherjee said.

She said the Commission has also asked for a report from the police authorities regarding the case. During the day, Bharati Mutsuddi, a former member of the State’s Women’s Commission, visited the correctional home and sought information from the home authorities about the condition of the athlete.
Ms Mutsuddi is one of the petitioners who had approached the Calcutta High Court on the alleged mistreatment of the athlete. The Court on Friday had asked the State government to submit an affidavit within two weeks in response to a petition on the issue.
Earlier, the West Bengal Human Right Commission had sought report from the Home secretary and Director-General of Police on a complaint of violation of human rights. Civil rights activists including sportspersons have also raised the issue of an MMS clip of the athlete going viral on the net.

Ms Pramanik was arrested on June 14 in the Baguihati area of North 24 Parganas district after her neighbour alleged that she was a male and had repeatedly raped and tortured her. The court had directed the State government to conduct necessary test on the athlete to ascertain her gender.
