The Congress on Tuesday demanded that the 5% GST on domestic LPG cylinders be reversed immediately, arguing that it would be a burden on the poor and calling it Gayi Savings Tumhari (your savings have vanished). “The price of a domestic LPG cylinder has gone up by ₹32 in parts of the country after the GST came into effect,” spokesperson Ajay Maken said here.

Poor burdened

“This is affecting the people, the poor especially. We demand that the GST on domestic LPG cylinders be removed immediately.”

Accusing the government of not passing on the benefits of a drop in the global crude oil prices to the people, Mr. Maken said, “The government is making profits to the tune of ₹3 lakh crore every year by not slashing fuel prices. It is making profits, but it is burdening the poor by imposing the GST on the LPG cylinder.”

He said the prices of food and beverages, helmets, hair oil, toothpaste, etc. had shot up, despite the Centre’s promise that they would drop after the GST implementation.
