A day after the Nationalist Congress Party supremo called BJP prime ministerial nominee Narendra Modi “mentally deranged,” senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Monday tweeted: “Sharad Pawar attacks Modi. Pawar Saheb understands the mood of the Nation as no one else does. Not good news for Modi!”
Mr. Pawar launched the broadside against Mr. Modi at a rally in Jalna, Maharashtra on Sunday. “Those who did not take even two steps to bring the country out of slavery, today say that the country should be freed from the Congress. I think they have become deranged. Let the elections get over. We will defeat them and treat them in a good hospital.”
According to agency reports, the NCP leader targeted Mr. Modi also for the 2002 Gujarat riots. He said Muslims, including the former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri, were killed at Gulberg Society, barely 20 km from Ahmedabad, but Mr. Modi never bothered to visit the kin of the victims.
As if taking his cue from the NCP supremo, Mr. Digvijaya Singh called Mr. Modi “shameless,” and attacked him for questioning the Congress decision to give the former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, who figures in the Adarsh Housing Society scandal, ticket to contest the Lok Sabha election.
“Modi- ‘Congress shameless for nominating Ashok Chavan.’ But Modi continues to have convicted Minister in Cabinet yet not SHAMELESS! MODI LOGIC,” he tweeted.
Mr. Singh also questioned the Gujarat Chief Minister’s silence on reinduction of the former Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, who is facing corruption charges, into the party. “Chavan has no case in Court, Yedurappa facing corruption charges in Court yet Modi doesn't talk about Yedurappa. Who is shameless?”
