“It is a serious onslaught on sovereignty of country”

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Friday demanded that the Narendra Modi government get a firm assurance from the U.S. that it would not indulge in surveillance and espionage operations in India.

The party said the government should not confine itself to mere protests and should warn the U.S. that bilateral relations would be affected if a firm assurance was not given. CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat expressed concern over the recent reports that the U.S. government had ordered its National Security Agency to conduct surveillance against the BJP.

“It is not a question of a single party. It is a serious onslaught on the sovereignty of the country,” Mr. Karat said at a Meet-the-Press programme organised by the A.P. Union of Working Journalists here.
