The Union Minister for Science and Technology and former Maharashtra Chief Minister, Vilasrao Deshmukh, died in Chennai on Tuesday afternoon.
Mr. Deshmukh died at 1.40 p.m. at the Global Hospital and Health City, Perumbakkam, a Chennai suburb, where he was admitted on August 6 with “rapidly progressive liver failure.” He also had circulatory failure, requiring support for his heart, respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation and renal failure that needed a continuous dialysis.
The body will be flown to Mumbai on Wednesday.

Funeral at native village
Mr. Deshmukh will be cremated at his native Babhalgaon village in Latur district on Wednesday, family sources said.

The mortal remains of the departed leader will be brought to Latur on Wednesday and kept at his house in Babhalgaon from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for people to pay their last respects, his brother Dilip Deshmukh, said.
The funeral procession will start at 3 p.m. and last rites would be performed at 4 p.m., he said.
Three-day state mourning
The Maharashtra government has announced a three-day state mourning from Tuesday over the demise of Mr. Deshmukh.
The announcement was made by Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan, official sources said.
