Strengthening the Maharashtra government’s efforts to ensure quashing of the acquittal of actor Salman Khan in the 2002 drunk driving case, the impoverished widow and labourer-son of the pavement dweller Shaikh Noorulla Shafik, who was crushed to death under the Bollywood star’s SUV, moved the Supreme Court on Wednesday as the “forgotten” victims of his alleged crime.
Shafik was among the four who died on September 28, 2002, when Mr. Khan’s SUV ran over them on a platform in Mumbai.
Shafik’s widow, Begumjaha Haroon Khan, and son Firoz Shaikh, represented by Supreme Court advocate Vipin Nair, said that as victims, they were “an integral part of the justice delivery system and that they are not to be forgotten and left high and dry.”

In a recent hearing, the Maharashtra government had called Mr. Khan’s acquittal “a complete travesty of justice.”
