UN condemns Badaun rape

June 03, 2014 12:46 am | Updated May 23, 2016 06:54 pm IST - LUCKNOW:

Condemning the gangrape and murders of two Dalit sisters in a Baduan village, the United Nations said on Monday that the gruesome crime highlights “the dangers girls and women all over India are exposed to due to the lack of toilets.”

Linking the incident with the basic human rights of women, it has demanded speedy justice for victims’ family.

“Around 65 per cent of rural population in India defecates in the open and women and girls are expected to go out at night. This does not only threaten their dignity, but their safety as well,” Louis-Georges Arsenault, UNICEF’s Representative to India, said in a statement.
