Two Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) militants and one intruder were killed in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, as a separatist-backed shutdown and heightened security disrupted normal life in the Valley on the Republic Day.
The police said the two JeM operatives were killed in an encounter in Pampore’s Khamoh area on the outskirts of Srinagar. The two militants were tracked following a specific tip-off and killed in a brief encounter in the morning, police said. “Arms and ammunition were also recovered,” officials added.
A BSF spokesman said an intruder, who paid no heed to warnings from BSF personnel on the International Border, was shot dead when he moved into India in Jammu’s Samba area around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

“Pakistan Rangers have been asked to take back the body,” said the BSF spokesman.
R-Day peaceful
Amid heightened security, the events marking the Republic Day passed off peacefully in the State. Security forces erected concertina wires to stop vehicular movement in many parts of the city and mobile Internet was suspended for the day. Train services also remained suspended.

Following a shutdown call issued by the Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) markets remained shut.
In Jammu, Governor Satya Pal Malik hoisted the tricolour at the Sports Stadium of the University of Jammu. Advisor to Governor, Khurshid Ahmad Ganai, took salute at the main function in Srinagar and unfurled the tricolour.
