Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday launched a broadside against the CPI(M) and urged people to oust the Left front from Tripura for its “failure on all fronts and [its] anti-people policies.”

“Communists are now [a] nonentity across the globe. Bring an end to their rule here in the shortest time [possible],” Mr. Gandhi said at an election rally at Koroimura, 20 km from Agartala.

Mr. Gandhi, who is on a campaign tour of the northeast, said: “The Left government is depriving genuine and needy youth of government jobs and other facilities. Here the only criterion is allegiance to the ruling party.”

Despite getting support and receiving funds from the Centre, the State government failed to improve the situation on the ground. While other States were growing fast, in Tripura 70 per cent of the people were living below the poverty line, the Congress leader said in his 14-minute speech.

He sounded confident that the UPA would come back to power and assured the people of Tripura of all support. “Delhi mein aap ki seepahi hein Rahul Gandhi [Rahul Gandhi is your soldier in Delhi].”

PCC chief Diba Chandra Hrangkhawl and Leader of the Opposition Sudip Roy Burman were present at the rally, held to mobilise support for the party candidate in West Tripura, Prof. Arunoday Saha.
