Trinamool Congress MLA Satyajit Biswas was shot dead late on Saturday evening in West Bengal’s Nadia district.

Mr. Biswas, who was elected from Krishnaganj in the district was killed at Majhdia in full public view after he descended from the stage after inaugurating a Saraswati Puja.

The incident has sent shockwaves in political circles in the State. Trinamool Congress leader Anubrata Mondal, who has been assigned the charge of the district, blamed the supporters of the BJP for the murder.

However, State BJP president Dilip Ghosh vehemently denied the allegations and said his party had nothing to do with the killing. Mr. Ghosh said the attack was due to the factional feud of the ruling Trinamool Congress. Mr. Ghosh further said that a few months ago, the MLA from Bengal’s Joynagar in South 24 Parganas district was targeted but he escaped narrowly.

“Three people lost their lives in the attack,” he pointed out.

A number of senior TMC leaders, including the newly-inducted Minster Ratna Ghosh were present at the event when the attack occurred.
