Debunking the idea of a third front government after the 2014 Lok Sabha election, the BJP asked Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh why his party had not withdrawn support to the UPA though he has many complaints against the Congress.
At a news conference here on Friday, BJP national spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said: “Mulayam Singh is talking about a third front, but it is history. It has no relevance for the present nor any promise for the future.Hitting out at Mr. Singh, the BJP said he appeared to have realised too late in the day that the Congress was “misusing” the CBI and the Income Tax department as well as the fact that it betrayed those who supported the party. “Why then does Mulayam Singh not part ways with the Congress,” he asked.
On the remarks made by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the possibility of a third term for him, Mr. Prasad said the reluctant politician had shown his true colours a few days after Holi and had indicated that he was “audaciously ambitious.”

“What his personal ambition or desire is, is entirely for him or his party to decide, it being an internal matter. However, the post of the Prime Minister of a big country like India is indeed very important and for the people of the country, the functioning of Dr. Manmohan Singh as the Prime Minister for the last nearly nine years is certainly a matter of public concern. The people may therefore despair at the very idea of even remotely enduring him as the Prime Minister for five more years.”
Whether the comment of Dr. Singh was aimed more at his foes in the Congress or to put a question mark on Rahul Gandhi’s claim for the post of Prime Minister, it was entirely an internal matter of the party, he said.
The lacklustre performance of Dr. Singh and the massive scams “are not what the people of the country want or deserve, that too for a third term,” Mr. Prasad said.
