Terms for fast set by police, says Manmohan

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday disassociated himself from the conditions set by the Delhi Police for social activist Anna Hazare's proposed indefinite fast from August 16 but told him that they were decided by the statutory authorities taking into account the prevailing circumstances and other factors.

In his reply to Mr. Hazare's letter, the Prime Minister categorically stated that his office was in no way involved in the decision-making process on such matters.

‘Committed to statute'

While advising Mr. Hazare to address his grievances to the authorities which had given permission for him to fast for only three days at the Jai Prakash Narain Park, Dr. Singh underlined his commitment to the Constitution and upholding it both in letter and spirit.

Response to letter

The Prime Minister's letter was in response to the one he received earlier in the day from Mr. Hazare where he had sought his intervention in the wake of the Delhi Police imposing conditions on him and seeking an undertaking for holding his proposed fast.
