Where creativity takes centre stage

At INSPIRE, students come up with science models to deal with issues confronting mankind

Bubbling with creative ideas, schoolchildren demonstrated their scientific bent of mind by displaying a variety of models at the ongoing district-level INSPIRE science exhibition, which entered its second day at SFS High School here on Wednesday.

The exhibits including several working models touched upon some of the complex issues confronting mankind and offered technology-driven suggestions to effectively deal with them.

J. Chandana, a class IX student of the Zilla Parishad Secondary School, Tirumalayapalem, displayed a model titled ‘Hanging House’ to prevent loss of life and minimise damage caused by natural calamities like earthquakes and super cyclones.

She had prepared the model under the supervision of her guide T. Chandrasekhar Rao, a science teacher.

A house built on the ‘hanging pillar’ can sustain effects of earthquake or super cyclone as it adjusts itself and bends to get maximum stability, Chandana explained referring to the scientific concepts related to centre of gravity and point of base.

The hanging house concept is a best alternative method of withstanding the effects of earthquake and cyclones besides minimising damage caused by other natural calamities, asserts Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao.

Exhibits put up by other participants based on automatic fire detection method and rain alarm system among other concepts hogged maximum attention at the science fair.
