Scores of villagers from Khammam rural mandal staged a protest demonstration here on Tuesday demanding construction of a new bridge across the Nagarjunasagar Project (NSP) canal at Pallegudem on Khammam-Mahabubabad main road.

In state of neglect

The demonstration was organised under the aegis of the CPI Khammam division committee to protest against the alleged failure of the NSP authorities to carryout necessary repairs to the existing bridge across the NSP canal that collapsed at Pallegudem around two months ago.

The protesters laid siege to the NSP Superintending Engineer’s office expressing their dissent over the suspension of traffic on the main road connecting Khammam rural mandal with Mahabubabad mandal of Warangal district due to the defunct old bridge at Pallegudem.

They deplored that farmers, students, traders and other residents belonging to Pallegudem and dozens of other villages in Khammam rural mandal were compelled to travel an extra six to eight km daily to reach the district headquarters owing to the suspension of traffic over the collapsed bridge at Pallegudem.

They called off their stir following an intervention of the NSP officials concerned.

The protesters submitted a memorandum to the NSP authorities to ensure immediate repairs to the old bridge for restoration of traffic on the main road and construction of a new bridge in place of the old one across the NSP canal at the earliest.

The CPI affiliated Rythu Sangham vice-president P. Kamalakar, the CPI division leaders Maulana and Suresh besides, the representatives of the Left affiliated unions and various other political parties took part in the agitation.

Villagers held protests stating that they have been travelling extra 6-8 km daily to reach the district headquarters due to heavy traffic over the collapsed bridge
