Registration of new vehicles is down to one-third of what it used to be before, with the government not yet taking a decision on the registration number format.
Officials say nearly 3,000 new vehicles were being registered daily in the State everyday, with about a 1,000 in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts alone. But since the formation of Telangana on June 2, the number dwindled as allotment of registration numbers was suspended till the district-wise series was finalised.
People buying new vehicles were asked to go through the registration process as usual, but the vehicles were not allotted numbers and registration certificates (RC) issued.

Transport officials say that people were preferring to wait for the new series to start, though they were told that registration process could be taken up but the numbers would be allotted only after the government decided on the series and district codes.
Officials have finalised the district series and sent the file for clearance to the Chief Minister. Principal Secretary, holding additional charge, Ajay Mishra said once the clearance was received, they would start allotting numbers and issuing RCs from Wednesday morning itself. The proposals are: Adilabad (TS-01), Karimnagar (02), Warangal (03), Khammam (04), Nalgonda (05), Mahabubnagar (06), Ranga Reddy (07 & 08), Hyderabad (09, 10, 11, 12, 13 & 14), Medak (15) and Nizamabad (16).
However, no decision was taken on the change of numbers of the old vehicles.
