UGC recognition still evades Satavahana University

October 09, 2017 12:09 am | Updated 12:11 am IST - KARIMNAGAR:

University does not have stipulated academic staff to teach the courses being offered

Satavahana University, which is already reeling under severe crisis due to non-availability of a permanent Vice-Chancellor since last three years, is also plagued with several problems on the academic front due to non-supervision of various wings in the university.

The Satavahana University was established in the year 2008, but is the only university in the newly formed Telangana State, which does not have UGC 12B recognition to secure funds and take up research and other academic activities.

Though the university had applied for the UGC recognition, the UGC authorities outright rejected the proposal stating that the university is not having the stipulated academic staff to teach various courses being offered.

Similarly, the students of pharmacy courses are disappointed with the university authorities for not securing the Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) recognition since last five years. Five batches have come out of the university completing their pharmacy courses, but they remained unemployed as their degree certificates do not have any value in the market as they lack PCI certification.

The university officials said that the PCI team had visited the University College of Pharmacy a few months ago and made some suggestions to secure PCI recognition. Accordingly, the authorities procured ₹ 60 lakh worth laboratory equipment etc, but they remained unused as they were not fixed in the laboratories. Similarly, the university procured 25 computers a year and half ago, but remained unused and dumped in the stores without any usage.

Existing Registrar M Komal Reddy, who would be retiring next year, is overburdened with various responsibilities . He is acting as Dean CDC, Dean (Academics and audit), OSD to VC, Dean (academic coordinator) and Dean (faculty of Sciences). “How can one faculty member do such a herculean task? Some of the duties should be delegated to other faculty members for efficient performance, but in vain,” complain the faculty members.

Students have complained that the spacious 40 acres of the University PG College lands on the shores of LMD reservoir were on the verge of encroachment, but no action is being initiated to stop encroachments.

Registrar M Komal Reddy said that the State government had given clear instructions for recruitment of faculty during the Vice-Chancellors’ meetings with the Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan in Hyderabad on Friday and hoped that they would get the UGC 12B recognition and PCI certification very soon.
