‘MHA letter on special powers to Governor has no sanctity’

All the TRS MPs will meet the Union Home Minister, Rajnath Singh, on Thursday to lodge their protest against the move to grant special powers to the Governor to monitor the law and order situation in Hyderabad, the common capital area of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for 10 years.

Mr. Rajnath Singh has given one hour time from 11 a.m. to 12 noon to the TRS MPs to hear their grievance. “We have already expressed our resentment on the issue in Parliament,” said TRS MP B. Vinod Kumar.

He told presspersons here on Wednesday that the letter sent by the Ministry of Home Affairs had no sanctity as it went beyond the scope of Section 8 of the A.P. State Reorganisation Act which clearly mentioned the manner in which the Governor’s powers should be exercised. It was only in the event of hate crimes against people of one region that the Governor could intervene after hearing the views of the Council of Ministers of Telangana.

‘No hate crimes in Hyderabad’

“No such hate crimes have occurred in Hyderabad and the question of empowering the government with special powers doesn’t arise,” Mr. Vinod said and hoped Mr. Rajnath Singh would see reason and resolve the matter.

To a question, he said the seven mandals of Khammam district were now part of Andhra Pradesh since the Centre had passed the Bill although the tribal population here was still protesting against the move. “We did our best to prevent the transfer of the seven Mandals,” Mr. Vinod said.
