Decision to take up project for reverse pumping of water requires political will, say officials

The acute water scarcity in the district headquarters town and the surrounding areas has turned an electoral opportunity for Congress MLA from Sangareddy T. Jayaprakash Reddy.

For the past three months the district headquarters town has been reeling under severe water shortage. It is not only agriculture that has been impacted but also the people of the town are struggling under acute drinking water shortage.

With Municipal elections around the corner, the Congress MLA has demanded that Godavari water must be supplied to the district headquarters and declared that he was not only willing to meet Telangana Rashtra Samithi president and Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on the issue but also ready to felicitate the TRS Lok Sabha member from Medak Kotha Prabhakar Reddy and former MLA Chinta Prabhakar if they were able to get the water.

Strategic silence

The TRS leaders who have always strongly countered Mr. Jayaprakash Reddy, have remained silent, for reasons best known to them. Interestingly officials, on condition of anonymity, point out that getting Godavari water to the district headquarters town was feasible, provided there was political will.

“Reverse pumping is the buzz word today in irrigation projects. The same can be used to pump water from Patancheru to Sangareddy. Already there is in place 25 kilometres of pipeline, which was used to pump Singur water to Hyderabad. Using the same pipeline and pumps we can pump the water to Sangareddy from Patancheru. If they are any minor repairs to the pipeline they can be completed within short time. Only thing is that there should be political will to do that,” commented an official.

“We need 10 MLD water per day to meet the requirements of the district headquarters and sufficient Godavari water is available with the government, to be supplied to the district headquarters. The higher officials have to take a decision,” said another official.
