In order to improve educational standards, Satavahana University has announced the introduction of detention system from this academic year onwards.
Though the university has decided to introduce the detention system at the graduation and post-graduation levels only, the student community is up in arms against the new system. The students’ union had even staged protests against the system.

The university authorities said that they would not go back on the introduction of the detention system as its parent body, Osmania University, has already implemented the system. Sources said that the non-implementation of the detention system was only helping private degree and PG colleges as they were enrolling students for the sake of collecting fees and neglecting the education of students. The officials also alleged that some private educational institutions were purposefully encouraging student unions to oppose the detention system.
“We have taken a decision to introduce detention system for the benefit of the student community. All we want is that the students become employable after completion of their courses, they said and added that they would convene a meeting with the principals of various colleges and further discuss the issue.
However, SFI district secretary B. Shekhar said that the detention system would distance rural students from higher education. He said that rural students were completing their school education and intermediate in Telugu medium and later joining degree to opt for English medium education. It would be difficult for students to clear the degree first year examinations, he argued. He alleged that the University was purposefully introducing the detention system to discourage poorer sections from higher education.
