Search Committee constituted to shortlist candidates

At last the State government has decided to appoint a regular and permanent Vice-Chancellor for the Satavahana University and constituted the Search Committee to shortlist names and submit to the Governor.

If all goes well, the Satavahana University would have a full-fledged Vice Chancellor within a week. The Higher Education department had already invited applications from the probable candidates for the post in May this year. More than 70 candidates applied for the post.

Sources said that the Search Committee had examined all the application forms and is likely to shortlist three names, including retired Kakatiya University professor in Chemistry Ravinder, retired professor in computer science of JNTU Vinay Babu and Telangana University Registrar Shiva Shankar. The Search Committee list would be first submitted to Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao, who would select one name and forward it to Governor ESL Narasimhan for final announcement, sources said.

Since the inception of Satavahana University in the year 2008, only two full-time regular vice chancellors have worked for six years and three others worked as incharge VCs. The first Vice Chancellor of the University was Md. Iqbal Ali, who worked from July 28, 2008 to July 27, 2011. Later, the government did not appoint a regular VC. Kakatiya University Vice Chancellor B. Venkatratnam was appointed incharge VC from July 28, 2011 to April 18, 2012.

K. Veera Reddy assumed charge as full-fledged Vice Chancellor on April 19, 2012 and continued in the post till April 21, 2015. Again the government did not appoint the VC and asked Mr. Veera Reddy to continue as incharge VC. He was incharge VC only for four months and resigned to the post for personal reasons.

Later, the government appointed GHMC Commissioner B. Janardhan Reddy as incharge Vice Chancellor. On August 30 2017 HMDA Commissioner T. Chiranjeevulu took over as incharge Vice Chancellor on August 13, 2015.

As the GHMC Commissioner was busy with his regular duties, he could not accord time for the university. When he showed disinterest in the VC post, the government appointed HMDA Commissioner T. Chiranjeevulu as the incharge on August 30, 2017 and he continues to hold the post. But, he is also busy with his workload and unable to visit the university frequently and look after administration and academic activities.
