The decision was made at a roundtable organised by the CPI (M) district committee here on Sunday.

A district-level action committee consisting of members of various political parties, including the Left parties, has called for a dharna here on July 13 to protest against the proposed move by a private firm to set up a bulk drug manufacturing unit at Annarugudem in Thallada mandal.

A decision to this effect was taken at a roundtable organised by the CPI (M) district committee here on Sunday. The district level leaders of CPI, CPI (ML-ND), TDP and Congress, besides various other organisations, participated. The speakers opposed the proposed bulk drug manufacturing unit at Annarugudem, citing environmental issues. They contended that the site identified for the purpose is situated close to a residential locality and encompasses vast agricultural lands. They wanted the government departments concerned to deny permission to the unit and find some other suitable site away from the residential areas. A representative of a non-governmental organisation pointed out that the villagers of Annarugudem and Gopalapeta were vehemently opposing the proposed unit, fearing adverse impact on the groundwater sources and agricultural fields.
