Overwhelming response to The Hindu quiz

What is the expansion of BrahMos?, came a poser from the quiz master Lt. Col. Dr. Y Ashok at a quiz contest organised by The Hindu in association with Harvest Public School here on Saturday.

A student came up with the right answer: The name of BrahMos, the supersonic missile, is derived from two rivers – Brahmaputra of India and the Moskva of Russia.

This was one of the many challenging questions that were shot at the participants by Lt. Col Dr Ashok, a senior faculty member, Dr Pinnamaneni Siddhartha Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Foundation, Gannavaram, Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh, at the quiz held on the sprawling premises of Harvest Public School here.

The quiz contest was organised on the theme “Indian Constitution and Freedom Movement” on the eve of the Republic Day slated for Monday.

The school correspondent Ravi Maruth, Principal Parvathi Reddy and others spoke at the inaugural function. The contest witnessed overwhelming response with a total of 147 teams consisting of 294 students from over 30 schools participating in it.

Questions related to National Emblem, contents and provisions of Indian Constitution, supreme sacrifices of freedom fighters and distinguished services of armed forces in defending the territorial integrity of the mother land and other subjects of topical relevance were posed using audio-visual aids during the preliminary and final rounds of the contest.

The team from Teja Vidyalaya, Kodad, Nalgonda district, K Abhigna and T Brahmmani, has won the first prize.

The team comprising Amit and K Srikar Satya of Harvest Public School and another consisting of M Kiran and V T Trinay of the same school secured the second and third prizes respectively.

Assistant Collector (Training), Khammam, Shashanka Konduru, gave away the cash prizes and merit certificates to the first, second and third prize winners. Speaking on the occasion Assistant Collector (Training), Khammam, Shashanka Konduru, exhorted schoolchildren to explore knowledge beyond textbooks to come up with flying colours in their academic and career pursuits. He said active participation in quiz contests and other co-curricular activities will help the schoolchildren enrich their knowledge base, carve out a bright future for themselves and serve the cause of society.
