OU helpless

May 24, 2015 12:23 pm | Updated 12:23 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

Osmania University has nine identified camps on the campus where residents have been using the land and its amenities. Despite several attempts made to shift them by the administration, nothing much could be done. Most of these people are the kith and kin of workers brought for construction of Arts College and other buildings a few decades ago.

An effort was made in the 1980s to relocate these from the campus and the university parted with a huge piece of land (now called the Manikeshwari Nagar). But majority of them took their share in Manikeshwari Nagar but continued to live in the old camps citing divisions within the families.

A senior teacher said that another rehabilitation package was worked out by the university administration in the early 90s in coordination with the district administration. As per the plan, nearly 1,000 residents from the nine camps were to shifted to one piece of land on the varsity edges and in turn university was to be given a piece of land in Madhapur for developing a research centre. But that did not materialise.
