The Prathima Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Nagunuru village on the outskirts of Karimnagar town has decided to inaugurate a state of the art Centre of Excellence for sickle cell/thalassemia and other blood disorders on January 6.
Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Health T. Rajaiah will inaugurate the laboratory along with Minister for Finance Eatala Rajender and other dignitaries on January 6. This centre will be one among the five centres in the country treating sickle cell/thalassemia patients.
The centre will be focussing on screening susceptible people by doing early testing of haemoglobin electrophoresis and prenatal screening of antenatal mothers by cordocentesis and chorionic villus samples. Also, newborns will be screened immediately after birth for appropriate diagnosis and treatment. The PIMS has also formed a round the clock helpline for patients who need packed red blood cells and blood transfusion. The number of the helpline is 7093066617.
