Senior doctors from Telangana on Wednesday maintained that elections for office bearers of Indian Medical Association (IMA), Telangana State will be held in Hyderabad in the next two months. The doctors have termed the proposal of the IMA, AP State to hold elections for IMA, Telangana in Vijayawada this July as ‘ridiculous’.
The decision to float IMA unit of Telangana State was taken on Sunday in a meeting of several senior doctors from the region at IMA building, Koti. In the meeting, doctors also formed an ad hoc committee entrusted with the task of framing a separate constitution for IMA, Telangana and hold elections for office bearers.
“After formation of Telangana, how can IMA, AP State conduct elections for IMA Telangana in Vijayawada? Most IMA members in Telangana have been consistently demanding for separate Telangana branch. We are sure our national body of IMA will recognise the situation,” said Chairman of Adhoc Committee, Dr. A. Gopal Kishan in an interactive session with presspersons on Wednesday.

Members of IMA, Telangana State pointed towards a resolution that was passed in the IMA general council meeting of the A.P State in Warangal on August 11, 2012. “Our members had passed a resolution to form a separate IMA, Telangana State branch and our present deputy CM, T. Rajaiah, was a witness to the resolution because he is a member of IMA Warangal branch. But, no initiative was taken though two years have lapsed,” convener, ad hoc committee, Dr. L. Surender Reddy said.
While the parent body of IMA, AP State had maintained that such an attempt to float a body was illegal, the IMA Telangana State members brushed it aside. “We will tour all Telangana districts and galvanise our members to take active participation in IMA activities. We have also set up an election committee to hold elections in Hyderabad and have requested central observers from IMA to be present,” Dr. Gopal Kishan added.
