Monsoon session may wind up early

With the entire opposition suspended and most of the listed business transacted, Govt. may adjourn House sine die today itself

he ongoing monsoon session of the Telangana Legislature may conclude on Wednesday as the important listed business has already been transacted.

The speculation gained ground in the lobbies on Tuesday and a few key Ministers simply smiled away when encountered with the question. Some Ministers felt that the Treasury benches had ensured that most of the business ‘agreed upon’, in the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting before commencement of the Monsoon session, had already been transacted.

It is believed that the government is of the opinion that there would not be any important business to be taken up from Thursday onwards as all major issues, including farmers’ problems, power situation and water grid had already been debated in the form of short discussions and the subject of Mission Kakatiya and welfare schemes were scheduled for Wednesday.

Moreover, the entire Opposition, barring the MIM, is suspended for rest of the session after their insistence on one-time settlement of farm loan waiver. The Congress and Telugu Desam Party –Bharatiya Janata Party combine have already hit the road meeting farmers’ families and trying to put the government in a spot.

Sources stated that the government had made up its mind to end the session on October 9 instead of October 10 as decided in the Business Advisory Council (BAC) meeting held on September 23, before weighing the option of adjourning the session sine die on Wednesday itself. The reason listed out for the October 9 sine die include the bandh being planned by Opposition parties on that day on the issue of farmers’ problems and the day being second Saturday of the month -- a regular holiday for the government. Some old-timers stated that the Assembly was used for holding ‘unofficial’ joint sessions of legislators in the past for orientation classes by the Rajaji Institute.

Interestingly, Congress MLA Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka said although the Speaker had the power to adjourn the House ‘sine die’, he could do that only after calling for another Business Advisory Council meeting. “And remember the Leader of Opposition in Assembly, K. Jana Reddy’s name and that of the Telugu Desam Floor Leader Errabelli Dayakar Rao are not included in the list of suspended Members. They could be invited but they might not turn up for a Business Advisory Council meeting and citing their absence, the Speaker can go ahead,” the Member said. However, he added that having suspended almost the whole of the Opposition, the Treasury benches had the entire House to themselves. Telangana Legislature Secretary S.Raja Sadaram told
