The Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen is upbeat about bagging the chairmanship of Nizamabad Municipal Corporation and the Bhainsa municipality where it is in a position to get its nominees elected. The party is expected to sail with Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) in the ensuing indirect elections to these offices since it has already extended support to the ruling party.
As per the schedule announced by the State Election Commission, indirect elections to the office of chairperson, vice-chairperson of municipalities and Nagar Panchayats, president and vice-president of MPPs and chairperson / vice-chairperson of ZPPs are scheduled to be held on July 3 (municipal bodies), July 4 (MPPs) and July 5 (ZPPs) respectively by show of hands.
In the 50-member Nizamabad corporation, Majlis and Congress have 16 corporators each, TRS 12 and BJP 6. The Congress is reportedly in touch with the Majlis to seek its support. But sources say the latter is likely to go with the TRS and share power with it in different municipalities.

The Majlis is also eyeing the Bhainsa municipality where it has a good chance of getting its nominee elected to the chairman’s post. In the elections to local bodies, the Majlis put up a good performance bagging 101 wards, including five in Adoni of Kurnool district. In 18 municipalities in Telangana, the party has secured a total of 96 wards. This include Nizamabad (16), Bhainsa (12), Nirmal and Tadur (10 each), Sangareddy (8), Bodhan and Mahabubnagar (7 each), Kortla (5), Adilabad (4), Nalgonda and Zaheerabad (3 each), Naryanapet and Karimnagar (2 each), Sadasivpet, Vikarabad, Medak, Shadnagar, Kamareddy, Peddapalli, Kalwkurthi (one each).
Meanwhile, the SEC has notified the Majlis as a recognised political party in Telangana with immediate effect in the context of local body elections based on the order issued by the Election Commission of India. The provision of whip will be applicable to the Majlis in the context of indirect elections, it is said.
