DNA test mooted to determine biological mother

Frayed tempers were witnessed in front of the Balala Sadanam here on Thursday where the two-and-a-half-year-old girl of Mahabubabad had been staying since Monday after being rescued by the police from a childless couple in Yellandu town.

Chaos broke out at the entrance of the State-run Balala Sadanam in the evening when Uma, the “biological mother” of the girl, and Swaroopa, who adopted the latter illegally, had a heated exchange, staking claim over the girl. Uma arrived at the Children’s Home to see her daughter but was allegedly denied entry. Almost at the same time, Swaroopa turned up with her relatives leading to a heated altercation.

Uma maintained that her husband had given her daughter for adoption soon after the latter’s birth without her knowledge.

Ms Swaroopa said Ms Uma and her husband Bav Singh had given the girl for adoption citing abject poverty in 2015. Doubting the ability of Ms Uma and her husband to raise the girl owing to their ‘poor’ financial condition, Ms Swaroopa urged the authorities to “legalise the adoption” of the girl to enable her to bring the latter up with good care.

As the situation turned tense, the police intervened and shifted both Ms Uma and Ms Swaroopa to the two-town police station.

WCD&SC Department officials counselled both of them.

The authorities reportedly mooted the DNA test to determine the biological mother of the girl.
