Five of a family drown in Dindi Reservoir

Five people including two girls drowned in Dindi reservoir constructed across Dundubi river, about 80 kms from the district headquarters here on Monday.

Tragedy struck the families of D. Karnakar Reddy and D. Datta Reddy, both brothers from Dindi village on Monday. The brothers had on Sunday morning performed the 10th day ceremony of their father Malla Reddy at the reservoir. All the family members had a swim in the reservoir after the ceremony.

Mr. Karnakar Reddy’s daughters – Devayani (17) and Joythsna (22) and Mr. Datta Reddy’s sons - Harshavardhan Reddy (27) and Praneeth Reddy (22) and another close relative Avaneesh Reddy (23) went to the reservoir again on Monday morning to have a swim. Unaware of the depth of the reservoir, the youngsters ventured into the reservoir and got drowned. Avaneesh Reddy who knew swimming tried to rescue his relatives and in the process he, too, got drowned.

Fishermen who were in the vicinity rushed to the spot and tried to rescue the youth, but couldn’t save them. Using fishing nets, they retrieved all the five bodies.

Harshavardhan was working with a private bank in Hyderabad while his younger brother Praneeth completed B-Tech recently. Joythsna was B-Tech final-year student and her sister Devayani was doing Intermediate in a local college in Dindi. Avaneesh Reddy, native of Janagaon in Warangal district, had completed his graduation.

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has expressed shock at the drowning of five youth in the Dindi reservoir waters and ordered an inquiry into the incident, according to CMO. Expressing grief at the tragic death of the five youth, Home Minister Naini Narasimha Reddy said the government would examine payment of ex gratia to the bereaved families after getting a report on the incident from the Nalgonda district authorities.
