Bandh for Bhadrachalam as new district

October 06, 2015 04:01 pm | Updated 04:01 pm IST - KHAMMAM:

Shops and business establishments downed their shutters in Bhadrachalam town on Tuesday in response to a dawn-to-dusk bandh called by Girijana Samkshema Parishat (GSP) and “Save Bhadradri Committee” to press for formation of an Adivasi district with Bhadrachalam as its headquarters.

The usually bustling streets of the temple town wore a deserted look during the bandh. The bandh has been called to mount pressure on the Telangana Government.

Activists owing allegiance to the GSP and the constituent organisations of the “Save Bhadradri Committee” staged a road roko near the bus station in the morning.

Vehicular traffic including the movement of the RTC buses on the town stretch of the National Highway 30 (Old NH No 221) was disrupted for sometime due to the road blockade.

The demonstrators displayed banners and placards in support of formation of Bhadrachalam district by bringing all the 24 tribal sub-plan mandals spread in the Agency area, under its purview.

The adivasi leaders contended that such a move was imperative to protect the constitutional rights of adivasis and rectify “gross injustices” meted out to them. Activists of various organisations and political parties, above party lines, have extended their support to the agitation.
