Acute shortage of groundwater has sent residents of apartment complexes worrying in the town, who earlier never bothered about drinking water as Lower Manair Dam (LMD) Reservoir on the outskirts used to meet their needs.
The depleting groundwater table and storage level in the reservoir is of concern to everyone now.
Gone are the days when there was abundant ground water in the town. With the mushrooming of apartments, availability of water became scarce and the people are forced to shell additional Rs. 2,000 to Rs. 3,000 per individual flat for purchasing water every month.

Now, all the people living in the apartment complexes have volunteered to construct a water harvesting structure in each complex to recharge the groundwater table in the coming rainy season. Some environmentalists are coming forward to sponsor the construction of rain water harvesting structures. Annavaram Devender, who lives in Maruthi Apartment in Bhagathnagar locality here, said that they were forced to construct the water harvesting structure to conserve rain water for the future in their apartment.
“We also issued notices to flat owners to conserve water by not using showers for bathing and running tap for cleaning utensils and clothes. They were asked to use bucket and mug and use water judiciously”, he informed.

Mayor S. Ravinder Singh, who had embarked on the programme of construction of water harvesting structures during the last rainy season in the municipal office, started asking all the residents to construct rainwater harvesting structures without fail. There was good response to the campaign and this year so far 50 water harvesting structures have been constructed in apartments, the Mayor said.
People have realised the importance of conserving rain water for future with the prevailing drought conditions, he said.
