Will capital be a cosmic or machine city?

November 27, 2014 12:23 am | Updated November 16, 2021 09:33 pm IST - NELLORE:

With the State government announcing the appointment of Special Commissioner of the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA), a body formed to oversee the construction of new capital, including development of infrastructure in the region, the incumbent, N. Srikanth is studying several aspects involved in the process.

A day after his appointment, Mr. Srikanth told The Hindu about his priorities, preparations to discharge his responsibility and possible models to be followed to build the capital city. “It is a great opportunity to be part of the capital construction exercise. I believe in the government’s policies will be effectively translated into reality,” said Mr. Srikanth. He is expected to hand over the charge to Ms. M. Janaki as Nellore Collector on Thursday.

On his immediate plans, he said that he had started studying different aspects involved in the construction process of the new capital including land acquisition and its usage to suit the needs of a futuristic and functional city.

Stating that a lot of planning has to go into the development of capital, Mr. Srikanth said that there were two basic components in the CRDA—the capital area and the capital region. The capital area is where government buildings and social infrastructure will come up. The capital region includes surrounding villages, towns and municipal corporations.

“All together, the CRDA is expected to function like an urban development authority in the capital region. When it comes to capital area, it will take over the functions of a municipal corporation and collects taxes as well,” he said, adding that he would subscribe to online courses on urban planning and development of amenities on par with world standards.
