Organised criminal gangs have a free run

March 19, 2015 12:00 am | Updated November 16, 2021 07:12 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

Police often boast of busting gangs of cricket betting, gambling, fake certificates and prostitution. Still, these crimes —mostly committed by organised gangs — never come to an end. Hyderabad Task Force teams claim to have caught several gangs making fake educational certificates.

Yet, such offenders continue to spring up quite often only to be caught again by Task Force sleuths. Rarely do law and order police catch such offenders for some inexplicable reasons. So are the cases of gambling dens, especially where games of cards are played with the organisers serving food and liquor to the players. Though the Cyberabad police even suspended three Sub-Inspectors and issued charge memos to some Inspectors and even ACPs, gambling continues to flourish. Their Special Operations Team sleuths go on raiding places and seize huge sums of cash.

Police take pride in nabbing gangs but why and how such crimes continue to be committed does not seem to be the concern of anybody. Police records suggest that conviction to members of such gangs was poor like in all other categories of crimes.

“Arrests don’t deter an offender but jail terms and convictions surely do. Impact on drunk-driving with the courts awarding jail terms is an example,” observe some police officers. It is rare that police secure conviction in gambling or cricket betting.

Most gambling dens are hired by the organisers, but investigators overlook if there was any contributory negligence on the part of the building owners. This assumes importance because in a gambling case busted two days ago, the flat owner was found receiving money daily in addition to the monthly rent of Rs. 25,000. Similarly, police nabbed scores of cricket bookies, but the investigation rarely proceeded beyond this point and no persons who bet money is ever arrested.
