Opposition to expansion of drug company mounts

Public hearing held amid tight security which is in contrast to the one held at Peddamasanpally a few days ago. Some of the villagers said that even farm workers were hesitating to work in the fields and they have alleged that about 14 women lost their pregnancy.

The public hearing for the proposed expansion of Covalent Laboratories was held amid tight security here on Thursday which was totally in contrast to the public hearing at Peddamasanpally a few days ago where people broke the chairs and set fire to the tent.

The venue had four-layered security which was screening people from the entry point itself and barricades and iron fencing were erected where the Joint Collector A. Sarath along with others heard the public voice. People were allowed inside only after Mr. Sarath called their name and CC cameras were installed at strategic points to survey the proceedings.

Initially some people, including some TRS leaders, welcomed the expansion of the industry stating that it would provide employment to locals. However, opposition to the expansion move rose gradually with K. Chaidambaram, an anti-pollution activist from Patancheru, questioning the way the public hearing was conducted. He was flayed presence of large police force and also the barricading of the place, stating that it was against the guidelines.

“Do not allow the industry expansion as it would further pollute land, air and water. We have enough experience with Patancheru and I urge people to see that it does not repeat here,” said Mr. Chidambaram. The pollution may result in abortions and children would be born with deformities, he warned.

“We are already suffering due to the factory located adjacent to our village. The water, air and land there are polluted and even grass grown there is not good for the cattle. Please do not give permission for the expansion of Covalent Laboratories that will take our lives,” says K. Badresh, angrily. He was one among the many representatives of this village as well as neighbouring villages, who expressed their anguish at the public hearing against the proposed expansion.

“It is people’s right to live in pollution free atmosphere and have access to clean water. Even relatives are not coming to our houses. Nakkavagu is getting polluted which is set to affect Papannapet and Medak mandals,” warned Bantu Srinivas, president of Balpanur.

Concluding the hearing, Mr. Sarath said that the public opinion would be forwarded to the government.
