The role of a teacher goes beyond teaching in the classroom and needs to be a role model for the student community, goes the popular saying.
Contrary to this norm, the teachers have been turning violators of several orders issued by the State Government bringing disrepute to the noble profession.
For several years, even after the government banned the use of mobile phones by teachers of government schools in classrooms, the teachers have been flouting the rules. The use of mobile phones has become a bane for the student fraternity as their teachers remain busy with the phones chatting on WhatsApp or browsing while in the classroom. Thanks to the free internet service provided by some mobile networks, it has come in handy for the government teachers to always be ‘online’ with their friends and others instead of teaching in the class.

“The teachers are unable to conduct classes uninterrupted for at least 40 minutes as their cellular phone rings frequently disturbing the entire class”, complains a headmaster.
Nallagonda village Zilla Parishad High School headmaster M. Prathap Reddy in Thimmapur, said that all the teachers should follow the code of conduct and not carry cellphones into the classrooms. They should deposit the instruments with the headmasters.

“We cannot take any action against the errant teachers for carrying phones into classrooms as they use it on the pretext of downloading lessons from the net”, said another headmaster.
Telangana State Gazetted Headmasters Association district president C. Pradhynma Kumar called upon headmasters to acquire and keep in safe deposit all the mobile phones of teachers during school hours.
He said that the inspecting authorities such as the DEO and the MEOs should take stern action against the errant teachers for carrying mobiles into the classroom and violating the norms.
Private institutions
Education Department authorities said that private institutions in the State do not allow teachers to carry cell phones into classrooms.
The results in private schools was a visible result of the strict code of conduct, they added.
“In government schools, we cannot initiate any action against the errant teachers due to various reasons,” they bemoaned.
