The prices of the popular freshwater fish species Korra Meenu have started shooting up ahead of the ensuing Mrigasira Karthi, the day when the demand for the particular variety of fish will increase manifold.

Fish consumption will go up during Mrigasira Karthi every year due to the traditional belief that eating fish during this season, which precede the onset of monsoon, will help cure certain breathing disorders.

Fish sellers have already increased the prices of Korra Meenu fish at certain places in the town by cashing in on the spurt in demand for that fish variety. The price of Korra Meenu fish, which ranged between Rs.300 to Rs.350 per kg until now, has shot up to Rs. 400 and above at several fish stalls in the town.

Meanwhile, the Fisheries Department has intensified its efforts to procure the requisite number of live Korra Meenu fingerlings meant for distribution at the ‘fish prasadam’ camp to be organised by the Bathini family in Hyderabad on June 8.

A total of 3,500 of live Korra Meenu fingerlings have been kept ready for dispatch to Hyderabad for use in the fish prasadam camp, says Srinivas, Assistant Director, Fisheries Department, Khammam.

Another 1,500 live fingerlings are being procured to meet the requirement. This is being done as per the instructions from the higher-ups for the benefit of people slated to attend the ‘fish prasadam’ distribution camp in the State capital on Sunday.
