Santosh Kumar (24) of Nadikapattu in Virudachalam in Cuddalore set himself and a 24-year-old woman ablaze reportedly after she refused to marry him. She is working as a junior assistant at Kelamangalam block development office here.
The police said that both of them had studied in a school at Rasipuram in Namakkal. He had met her parents seeking her in marriage.
But the woman’s parents did not consent. On Wednesday morning he got into the same bus she boarded, and asked her to marry him.

When she refused, he threatened to set her ablaze along with him. After getting out of the bus, he poured petrol on himself, set fire, and hugged her. Local residents put off the fire and took them to hospital. Based on her complaint, the police had registered a case under Sections 307 and 341 of IPC against Santosh Kumar.
