When Information Technology is already evolving in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for Digital India during his visit to the Silicon Valley in the U.S. lacks any reason or rationale, Community Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Sitaram Yechury said here on Wednesday.
Talking to reporters ahead of the party’s public meeting, Mr. Yechury said India should rely on its own talent and create its own platform in the internet world.
India should encourage domestic talent to achieve “digital India” rather than calling on MNCs. Observing that growth was not up to the expected levels, Mr. Yechury pointed to the lack of strong domestic demand. Manufacturing industry in the country has 30 per cent of its capacity going unutilised. With the purchasing power of the common man declining owing to various factors, he called for high dose of public investment to trigger growth in employment.

He also accused the NDA government of fostering and sharpening communal tensions and hatred. The country’s premier research institutions are being filled with RSS ideologues with a potential threat to distortion of our past, Mr. Yechury said.
Later, addressing a public meeting at Tirupur, Mr. Yechury said it is pertinent now to translate the present political freedom into economic freedom by creating society without exploitation.
