In the non-supervisory category, while the median gross hourly wage for a man is around Rs. 255.32, for a woman, it is Rs. 206.28. In the supervisory category, the figures are Rs. 461.89 and Rs. 375.29, respectively.

The Monster Salary Index India IT Sector Report 2014, which was put together by online job portal Monster, IIM-Ahmedabad and Paycheck.in, says that in both non-supervisory and supervisory categories, women earn 18-20 per cent less than men.

The sample used for the analysis consists of 2,23,29 observations, with 88 per cent of the respondents being men. The report points out that men get promoted to supervisory positions more often than women. Possible explanations for this include women not being preferred for IT jobs that require night shifts and socio-cultural reasons such as men refusing to work under women. “It is surprising to see that the most modern sector of India is not only predisposed to a certain gender, but is also paying less to women employees than their male counterparts…,” Monster India managing director Sanjay Modi told this correspondent.
