June 18, 2011 01:59 am | Updated 01:59 am IST - VILLUPURAM:

At least two women refugees in the Chinna Salem camp have sought permission to go to Sri Lanka on various purposes.

When District Collector C.T.Manimekalai visited the camp on Friday to inspect its condition, Sri Lekha and Rajesh Kumari approached her to seek permission for their travel to Sri Lanka.

Ms. Sri Lekha told the Collector that since she wanted to pursue higher education in Sri Lanka she would not return to Tamil Nadu; whereas Ms Rajesh Kumari would dispose of her property there and return to Tamil Nadu within six months.

The Collector told them that after obtaining government response to their pleas necessary action would be taken. Another inmate Mohan said that there were 85 houses in the camp and most of these were in a dilapidated condition.

He appealed to the Collector to construct new houses for them and prior to that carry out the repair works. Other inmates said that the officials were carrying out the head count on a weekly basis and those who were not present at that time were not taken into the reckoning. Since, many of them were daily wage earners they would have to leave early and return in the late hours. Hence, during the weekly inspections none of them should be marked as “not present” in the registers.

The Collector promised them to take necessary action on their demands.
