Woman gives birth in ambulance

A 24-year-old woman, who is a resident of Naickaneri Hill near Ambur, delivered a baby in a 108 ambulance on Thursday.

Officials of the ambulance service, said Chitra had developed labour pain on Thursday morning and her family had called for the 108 ambulance.

“The road up the Naickaneri hill is narrow and was damby rain. The ambulance could not go up the hill and stopped around two kilometres away from her house. Her family members carried her to the ambulance in a doli,” said R.J. Shriraman, district manager of GVK EMRI that operates the 108 ambulance in the State said.

By the time she reached the ambulance, the membrane had ruptured, he said, adding that Mohammed Ismail, emergency medical technician and Prabhakaran, pilot of the ambulance delivered the baby inside the ambulance.

“Chitra had delivered a boy baby weighing three kilos within 10 minutes of arrival. The mother and baby were taken to the PHC at Madhanur,” he added.

Several mothers have delivered their babies inside the 108 ambulances. There have been 166 ambulance deliveries during January to December 2014 in Vellore district. In fact, this year, 183 babies were born in the ambulances from January to October, officials said.
